Day 28 - Music in the house

Music as self expression. That's what we've got going on over here. Lots of it. The teenager has headphones almost permanently inserted in his ears. It seems like he is discovering new music daily. He's very definitely at the age where he feels like his music choices help define who he is to the wider world, but at the same time he's excited to share all of the music he's finding.  The girl? Well, the girl, she sings and strums and writes and sings some more.  When she's upset, she goes to her room and sings.  When she can't sleep, I can hear her in her bed singing. The only way I can get her to take a shower some days is to remind her that she can always sing in there.  I love that we've reached an age where the kids are actively searching out what music means to them. It delights them. It comforts them. It moves them. And that moves me. Truly.

Day 6 - Guides, Mentors, Teachers....

School teachers, music teachers, cooking teacher, sewing teachers, photography teachers, meditation teachers...To those who meet us where we are and encourage us along the way. Those who know a little something and choose to share openly with passion. To the teacher who will sit with my girl until the sun sets on her music lesson, because she's sees an ember that she knows she can help grow if they 'go over it just one more time'. To the class teachers who encourage my girl to be exactly who she is and no less. To the algebra and science teachers who engage my teenager in a way that you might not think is possible, steering him towards concepts they know will excite him. To the countless photography mentors who give their knowledge freely, nurturing my need to learn more, and guiding me with a definitive but gentle hand. I'm so moved by teachers who are truly called to do what they do each day. These teachers who see that a seed of learning has taken root and give of themselves to be the patient nurturers and guides while they share all they know so that we can learn from them.  It's such a gift to us that they share knowledge in this way.  For this today, I am beyond thankful.

My friend Leslie posted a video of City and Colour on her Facebook page a few days ago.  I'd never heard of him before, but I'm really enjoying getting to know his music now.  I wanted to share with you on the off chance that I am not the only person on earth who had never heard of him. :)
